Medics to decide on SC order post GB meet

Tuesday, 10 September 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

Hours after the Supreme Court fixed a deadline for the agitating junior doctors of Bengal to return to their hospital duty, the medics said they would take a decision in that regard only after’the general body meeting.’

The junior doctors of Bengal who have been demanding justice for their colleague who had on’August 8 raped and murdered inside her workplace at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on’Monday expressed disappointment at not getting a favourable order and said that the Apex Court’had been misled by the State Government which had not taken measures --- as directed by the’ Court --- ensuring security to the junior doctors.’ “We are very disappointed because we thought that some of our pertinent demands would be’addressed … for instance the Court had earlier directed the State to ensure security of the doctors’but hardly a thing has been done in this regard … while CISF has been posted at RG Kar all the’other colleges are vulnerable to attack by the ruling party goons … otherwise the vandalism would not have taken place at our neighbouring Sagar Dutta Medical College or for that matter’our colleagues in Midnapore Medical College and other such institutions would not have been’threatened and attacked by the vested interests,” said K Karmakar one of the agitating doctors.

‘Another doctor said that the issue of a senior IPS officer offering money to the parents of the’victim doctor to shut their mouth adding and “the demand that the Police Commissioner’s role in the preliminary investigation be brought under CBI scanner was too not addressed.”

‘The Supreme Court had earlier passed an order directing the junior doctors to resume work by 5’pm on Tuesday failing which it would not interfere with any (coercive) measures if taken by the’State Government.

‘“There is CISF in our college but what about other colleges … there junior doctors are being’threatened everyday … this Government is waiting for the movement to subside … then the’faces of movement in various colleges would be harassed, heckled or even may be physically’assaulted or murdered,” said one of the doctors saying, “if you talk about government taking’measures it is all false … the Government has only effected some transfers which it was forced’to do but … if you talk of my (RG Kar) college ladies’ bathroom have not been constructed …’no CCTV have been installed in our department … threats are continuing on daily basis.”’

Another doctor referring to the Government report submitted before the Supreme Court said,’”one wonders how a Government can lie on oath … they are telling that 23 people have died on’account of our agitation … it is completely false … the Government has misled the Apex Court’’… because, house staff, intern and senior doctors are working overtime … Emergency,’Operation Theateres and indoor services are on and patients are being admitted … all of us are’unofficially assisting the senior doctors and helping out the patients … in fact we are doing more’work than before as we have in addition opened Abhaya Clinics to serve the patients … we are’extremely disappointed by today’s order.”
