India’s bravehearts

India's stellar performance at the Paris Paralympics is a testament to resilience, grit, and the unyielding spirit of Indian para athletes

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam once remarked, “dreams are not what you see in sleep; dreams are those that keep you awake until they're fulfilled.” The Indian squad for the Paris Paralympics has embodied this very spirit. With unwavering determination, they’ve shown that no dream is too big when fueled by the indomitable human will. The performance of Indian para-athletes has once again proved that sons and daughters of India have the mettle to take on the world against all odds.  With the largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes, India soared to unprecedented heights, making the world sit up and take notice of the nation's sporting prowess. Their extraordinary performances went far beyond mere medal counts-they embodied the true spirit of sportsmanship and perseverance, transcending physical limitations to achieve the impossible. India's medal tally in Paris showcased a remarkable blend of talent and hard work. Winning medals across various disciplines, including athletics, archery, and badminton, these athletes brought pride to the nation, igniting inspiration for future generations. Archery sensation Sheetal Devi, competing without hands, captured the world's attention with her sheer determination and skill, clinching a historic gold in the women's compound archery event.

Track and field athletes, always a strong suit for India, delivered breathtaking performances. The likes of Sumit Antil, who made a world record in javelin throw and Avani Lekhara, a champion rifle shooter who overcame spinal injuries to once again stand atop the podium, proved that India's strength in adaptive sports is only growing stronger. What stands out in the Indian contingent's performance is the remarkable spirit they embody. Every Paralympian carries a story of personal struggle and perseverance, but in Paris, these stories converged into one-a collective tale of breaking barriers. From training under adverse conditions to overcoming the societal stigma, these athletes have shown the world that true strength lies not in physical abilities but in mental tenacity. Athletes like Nishad Kumar in high jump, who continued to train despite financial constraints, and Bhavina Patel, a table tennis champion who overcame her polio-induced limitations, are emblematic of the fighting spirit that permeates the Indian contingent. The success in Paris is also a reflection of the increased support and recognition that para-athletes are finally receiving. Government initiatives, corporate sponsorships, and a growing awareness of inclusivity in sports have played a key role in fostering an environment where differently-abled athletes can thrive. But the success in Paris isn’t just about winning medals-it's about breaking the boundaries of what para-sports can be in India. The inspiring stories of athletes like Mariyappan Thangavelu, Devendra Jhajharia, and others resonate with the idea that disability is not a limitation. They have sparked a national conversation about inclusion, diversity, and the importance of creating opportunities for all.
