Villagers cut Marine Drive to avoid waterlog

Monday, 31 August 2020 | PNS | BALESWAR

Finding no other means to overcome waterlog woes, villagers of Bhograi bordering West Bengal had to cut the Talseri- Udaipur Marine Drive to let the excess rainwater into the sea.

About 1,700 people belonging to Wards-7 and 8 under Sahabajipur GP faced acute inundation following torrential rains as the water couldn’t find way to the sea allegedly after construction of prawn dykes in Datapur of Bengal.

The villagers alleged that before construction of the prawn gheris, rainwater was finding smooth passage into the Bay of Bengal. In the early 1990s, several prawn dykes were constructed in the area causing impediment in the draining path.

The villagers have been raising the issue before the district administration for more than 25 years but in vain.

After the heavy downpour, although the Water Resources Junior Engineer reached the site, the villagers had already cut the road. Local MLA Ananta Das and other elected representatives too went to the village.

The villagers demanded construction of a sluice gate to overcome the menace which they experience every year during monsoon season.

Notably, construction of the Marine Drive measuring 2.7 km is under progress at an estimated budget of Rs 6 crore since three years.
