Outbidding Indian companies, Zurich Airport International AG bagged the contract to design, develop and operate the soon-to-be constructed international airport at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida).
Four bidders — Anchorage Infrastructure Investments Holding Limited, Adani Enterprises Limited, Delhi International Airport Limited and Zurich Airport International AG — had vied for the construction contract but it was Zurich which romped home.
“Financial bids were opened before representatives of bidders at the NIAL (Noida International Airport Limited) office and the bidder was selected on the basis of highest bid as per Premium per Passenger (PAX). Anchorage Infrastructure Investments Holdings Limited’s bid was Rs 205, Adani Enterprises Limited’s Rs 360, Delhi International Airport Limited’s Rs 351 but Zurich Airport International AG quoted the highest bid of Rs 400.97 PAX.
Nodal officer of Noida Airport project, Shailendra Bhatia, said that since Zurich Airport International AG offered the maximum of Rs 400.97 per passenger, it won the bid.
“The above bid of Zurich Airport International AG will be put up before PMIC (Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee) on December 2,” he said.
UP state government spokesman Mrityunjay Kumar said that the state authorities had acquired 5,100 acres (2,063 hectares) of land and obtained environmental clearance for one of the biggest airports in Asia.
On Friday, Zurich Airport International said in a statement that it would develop and operate the new Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh under a 40-year concession.
It said that capital investment in the first phase of the project was expected to be about $650 million during the construction period of nearly four years. The first phase is expected to be able to accommodate around 12 million passengers per year, it said.
Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) had earlier identified 5,100 hectares of land for the project, out of which 240 hectares is owned by the UP government and the rest belongs to private individuals. The YEIDA has acquired 1,327 hectares for construction of terminal buildings and runways.
The airport is to be developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The plan is to build a two-runway airport by 2022-23 and then, at a future date, extend it to a 7200-acre six-runway airport.
As per the proposed plan, the airport will handle five million passengers per annum (MPA) initially and up to 60 MPA after expansion over 30 years.
