Strange animal kills 10 sheep in Birmaharajpur

Wednesday, 31 January 2018 | PNS | SONEPUR

A few months after unidentified predators triggered terror in Cuttack district’s Niali block, the scare has now gripped a village in Subarnapur district with mysterious death of 10 numbers of sheep reported at Kardapal under Birmaharajpur block recently.

This is the first case in Subarnapur district, while such incidents had been reported from districts like Ganjam, Boudh, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur earlier.

The sheep belonged to Santosh Mallick, a farmer. The sheep were found dead with their intestines out of their bodies. While the carcasses of eight numbers of sheep were recovered, the other two were not found. According to sources, Mallick tied 22 goats in a shed out of which 10 were killed and the rest have injury marks.

Meanwhile, Block Veterinary Officer (BVO) Subrat Purohit along with livestock Inspector has conducted post-mortem of the bodies. He has recommended to the higher authorities to provide adequate compensation to the farmer.

“I have lost my livelihood source with killing of sheep. I will not be able to manage my family if the administration doesn’t provide adequate compensation,” said the affected farmer.

The Incident has triggered anger among locals, especially farmers, as sheep farming is their main source of income.

Villagers alleged that, despite requests, forest officials have done nothing excepting saying that the animal could be a fox or a wolf that has killed the sheep.
