The association of Shiksha Preraks has threatened to intensify their agitation if the State Government continues to ignore their genuine demands. The members of the association are staging a dharna at the protest site from September 27. On Friday, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the office of Chief Minister, Dhirendra Panwar met the members of the association at protest site and assured that the Government would look into their demands. He also set up a meeting of leaders of the association with State Chief Minister on Saturday.

The president of the association Rajesh Rana said that the members of the association are now determined to take their agitation to a logical end. He said that more than 5,500 Shiksha Preraks are facing uncertain future as the State literacy mission has decided to stop the project from September 30. Rana said that the Prerakas receive a paltry monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 from the National literacy Mission (NlM) and Rs 1,000 per month from the State Government. He said that the Preraks have not received the stipend from NlM from last 16 months while the State Government’s stipend is pending from last six months.

Rana said that the State Government should give a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the family of Prerak Guddu of Johnpur in Tehri who died during the agitation on Thursday. The association is also demanding Government job for his wife. Rana said that the members of the association have no option but to intensify their agitation if the State Government fails to act on their demands.

Under the Sakshar Bharat programme of National literacy Mission, these Preraks were appointed in the year 2010 at Bageshwar, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi districts of the State where the literacy levels are low.

The term of the project is ending on September 30 but these Preraks want that their services should be continued and the State Government should adjust them into its services.
