SAD’s Dimpy Dhillon Joins AAP, may get ticket for Gidderbaha bypoll

Thursday, 29 August 2024 | PNS | Muktsar Sahib/Chandigarh

In a significant political development, Hardeep Singh ‘Dimpy’ Dhillon – a prominent leader from Gidderbaha and close aide of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal – joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday, ending his 38 years long association with the party. The move, seen as a major blow to the Akali Dal, was formalized in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who personally welcomed Dhillon into the party during a public gathering in Gidderbaha.

Chief Minister Mann did not hold back in his critique of Sukhbir Badal and his cousin Manpreet Badal, accusing them of neglecting the party members and the people of Punjab. He highlighted that while Sukhbir dreams of ruling for 25 years, he can’t even gather 25 loyal supporters. Mann further challenged Sukhbir to contest the upcoming elections from Gidderbaha, daring him to prove his leadership strength. He also vowed to take strict action against those responsible for sacrilege cases, emphasizing that his government will not spare anyone guilty of such offenses.

Dhillon’s political journey with the Akali Dal spans nearly four decades, during which he contested elections twice from Gidderbaha. Despite his dedication, he lost both times, including a narrow defeat by just 1,349 votes in the 2022 assembly elections against Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The Gidderbaha seat has been a stronghold for the Congress, but Dhillon’s influence in the region remains substantial.

Dhillon, a transporter-cum-politician, cited Manpreet Badal’s actions as a key reason for his departure from SAD. He accused Manpreet of causing confusion among party cadres and fostering ambiguity about future candidates. Dhillon expressed disappointment over Sukhbir Badal’s silence on these matters, which eventually led him to consider joining AAP. His decision was solidified after a discussion with CM Mann’s OSD, Rajbir Singh.

Dimpy Dhillon’s inclusion in AAP is expected to bolster the party’s position in the upcoming Gidderbaha by-election. Mann assured Dhillon of significant responsibilities within AAP, reflecting the party’s confidence in his leadership. The Chief Minister reiterated that the AAP is committed to the development of Punjab and welcomes those who are dedicated to serving the people.
