Taking yet another step towards clean energy, Punjab will get its second solar power plant when Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal will inaugurate a 34-megawatt project in lambi in Muktsar district on Friday.

Sukhbir, along with Punjab Minister for Non-Conventional Energy Bikram Singh Majithia, will inaugurate the Rs350 crore project which would generate 34 MW solar power to cater the electricity needs of more than one lakh families. The foundation stone of the unique solar power project was also laid by Sukhbir in January and the same has been completed in four months before its set date of completion. Renowned house in solar power sector, Azure, has setup this first of its kind project.

Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) had signed a MoU with Azure last year to put Punjab on the lane of solar power projects. “This project has been setup on the boundary of villages Panjava and Sikhwala on 170 acres non-cultivable land,” said the spokesperson.Giving further information regarding project, the spokesperson said that this pollution-free project will cater electricity needs of 250 villages equal to more than one lakh families besides preventing generation of 49,000 metric tonne of carbon dioxide annually.

Punjab has signed various MoUs with this venture to bring investment of Rs1,500 crore besides generation of 150 MW power through solar power projects, he added.
