n The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the date of voting for the seat vacated after Jyotiraditya Scindia of Rajya Sabha of Madhya Pradesh was elected a member of the Lok Sabha.
Voting will be held on this seat on September 3. The Election Commission has issued a notification for 12 vacant seats of Rajya Sabha across the country.
With this, the process of filing nominations will now begin. Jyotiraditya Scindia contested the Lok Sabha elections from Guna-Shivpuri seat in Madhya Pradesh.
Scindia defeated Congress's Yadavendra Singh in the election. After this, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership. The term left on the vacant seat is till June 21, 2026.
Many BJP leaders are in the fray for this seat. Madhya Pradesh has 230 assembly seats. In the 2023 assembly elections, BJP won 163 and Congress won 66 seats. Congress has lost three MLAs due to joining BJP.
In Madhya Pradesh, five Rajya Sabha seats fell vacant in April, for which voting was held in February. In this, four BJP and one Congress Rajya Sabha member got elected.
Party experts say that the decision for a seat will now be taken keeping in mind the caste equation. Last time members were elected from Dalit, OBC and women category. This time Rajya Sabha member can be elected from general quota only.
However, during the Lok Sabha elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had talked about taking him to Delhi. In such a situation, the claim of KP Yadav, who comes from backward class, cannot be rejected.
Senior BJP leader and former minister Narottam Mishra is being considered a contender for the Rajya Sabha seat.
During Operation Lotus and Lok Sabha elections, Narottam Mishra got a large number of Congressmen to join BJP. At the same time, he also played an important role in Operation Lotus. He is close to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Apart from this, the name of former MP Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya is also in discussion. Pawaiya is the co-incharge of Maharashtra BJP.
Apart from this, the names of BJP state vice-president Kantdev Singh and Mukesh Chaturvedi are also being discussed. Kantdev Singh is close to senior leaders of the organization. He has a good hold in Vindhya region. At the same time, the names of Mukesh Chaturvedi, who has a strong hold in the Chambal region, senior BJP leader Gopal Bhargava and former MP from Vidisha Ramakant Bhargava are also in discussion.
