Monsoon records shortfall from normal

The Monsoon rain has fallen short of normal this year, as the season bids adieu to the region.

According to the Met Department, Haryana and Punjab has recorded a rain deficit of minus 25 and minus 21 respectively during this monsoon. Chandigarh — the joint capital city of Punjab and Haryana has however recorded a slight departure from normal monsoon rainfall with shortfall of just 11 per cent.

Every year, the Monsoon season begins with the onset of rains in June and ends in September. This year, the southwest Monsoon had entered some parts of Haryana falling in the National Capital Region on July 2, but had turned weak thereafter halting its further advancement into the region.

“The southwest Monsoon has begun to withdraw. Compared to the previous years, the monsoon rainfall in the region has remained close to normal this time. Punjab and Haryana has recorded a rain deficit of 21 and 25 per cent respectively while Chandigarh has recorded a slight deviation from the normal monsoon rainfall,” said Surender Pal, Director Met Department, while talking to The Pioneer.

On the whole, Haryana received 343.9 mm rains against normal of 458.9 mm recording a deficit of 25 percent.  The neighbouring State of Punjab recorded 386.4 mm rains recording a departure of 21 per cent from the normal rains of 490.3 mm in monsoon, said he.

Chandigarh has received 752.8 mm rainfall against normal of 842.7 mm, he added.

In agrarian State of Punjab, Ferozepur recorded highest rain deficit of 83 per cent followed by Sangrur with minus 52, Tarn Taran with minus 50. The Monsoon rain exceeded by 43 per cent in Kapurthala which recorded 600.5 mm rains and it exceeded by 35 per cent against the normal in Moga district which received 474.4 mm rain.

 In neighbouring Haryana, Panchkula, Fatehabad and Gurugram received lowest rainfall during this monsoon. The district where deficit is more than 50 per cent are Panchkula with 57 per cent deficit, Fatehabad with 51 per cent rain deficit. Among other districts, Gurugram recorded deficit of minus 48, Panipat minus 40, Ambala minus 39. Kaithal recorded lowest rainfall deficit of minus two receiving monsoon rains of 375.5 mm.

last year, Punjab and Haryana had recorded rain deficit of minus 28 and minus 27 respectively.
