Mayawati accuses BJP of playing divisive politics in coming assembly polls

Monday, 31 October 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

Former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati, on Sunday, reacted strongly to the Uniform Civil Code issue raised just ahead of the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party.

She claimed that the condition of the BJP in Gujarat was really not good hence it had started with divisive politics.

Accusing the BJP of raising divisive issues instead of development and employment, Mayawati tweeted that instead of employment and development in Uttar Pradesh and other states, by making Uniform Civil Code an election issue or raising other controversial and divisive issues, the BJP clearly exhibited that it was finding itself in tough condition in the coming elections hence it was resorting to divisive politics.

The BSP supremo reminded that the Supreme Court had warned the government not to take any decision on Uniform Civil Code. Questioning the propriety of constituting a committee for Uniform Civil Code in Gujarat, Mayawati said, "While the Centre itself has recently told the Honourble Supreme Court that no decision would be taken on the Uniform Civil Code why is the party raising this issue in the poll-bound states ruled by it.”

The BSP chief also indirectly accused the BJP of getting a lot of money from unknown sources through electoral bonds. In another tweet, Mayawati said, "How appropriate is the use of funds received from unknown sources in the public eye to influence elections? Latest statistics show that there is secret funding of electoral bonds before the elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Donations worth Rs 545 crore have been given through it. Where is this money going?"
