Chandigarh: The issue of IAF strike in Pakistan dominated the proceedings of declamation contests in Panjab University on Wednesday as participants spoke at KK Grover and AC Bali Declamation Competition organized by Department of Hindi at Gandhi Bhawan. A total of 37 students from various colleges and university departments participated in the event. Hindi Department chairperson Dr Gurmeet Singh informed that PU’s Dean International Students Professor Nandita Singh was the chief guest for the KK Grover contest, and PU’s Dean Research Professor RK Singla was the chief guest for AC Bali Contest.

Chandigarh: Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) participated in one of the biggest tourism fair of Chandigarh — India Travel Mart-2019 — held at Himachal Bhavan from February 22 to 24 to showcase diversity in different travel segments by the tourism board. The aim to participate in the travel mart was to provide knowledge among the buyers and operators on the latest offerings along with increasing awareness about the vast travel opportunities available in Madhya Pradesh.
Eight booked under Gambling Act
Chandigarh: Haryana Police’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) has arrested eight persons under Gambling Act from Rampura Bagria village in Sirsa district. More than Rs 2.03 lakh was also recovered from their possession. Spokesperson said that all accused were arrested following a tip off during patrolling in the area. Acting on a tip-off, CIA team immediately raided and nabbed eight persons indulged in gambling at public place. A case under Gambling Act had been registered against them in Police Station Nathusari Chopta.
National conference on power concludes
Chandigarh: The two-day conference of Power, New and Renewable Energy Ministers of States and UTs, held under the chairmanship of Union Minister of State for Power, New and Renewable Energy RK Singh, concluded at Gurugram on Wednesday. Haryana Transport Minister Krishan Lal Panwar, who attended the conference, said that the conference’s aim was to ensure reach of electricity in those villages, which were deprived of it till now. Apart from this, it also aims at modernization of power supply system, reduce line losses and to reduce the losses of power corporations.
1187 degrees awarded at Shoolini University
Shimla: A total of 1187 students of the Shoolini University received degrees, including 51 PhD other than the post-graduates and graduates, at the varsity’s convocation ceremony on Wednesday. Besides, 26 gold medals and nine merit certificates were also awarded to the students who had done extremely well in their academic fields. Shoolini University Chancellor Ramesh Mehan, a leading industrialist and philanthropist, was the chief guest on the occasion, while Sanawar Lawrence School headmaster Vinay Pande was Guest of Honour.
Chief Western Command felicitates soldiers
Amritsar: Western Command Investiture Ceremony was conducted at Hayde Auditorium, Amritsar Cantt by the Panther Division under the aegis of Vajra Corps. Lt Gen Surinder Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, felicitated 49 officers and soldiers of the Indian army with gallantry and distinguished service awards for their acts of bravery, exceptional devotion to duty and distinguished service to the nation. A total of one YSM, two Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 29 Sena Medal (Gallantry), one Bar to Sena Medal (Distinguished), four Sena Medal (Distinguished), and 12 VSM were awarded during the ceremony. The Army Commander bestowed Unit Citation to 17 units of the Western Command for their meritorious and outstanding performance.
