A herd of 3 elephants including a tusker has moved out of the tiger reserve Palamu and is causing damages to the maize and paddy fields under the Kundri range of the Medininagar forest division.
There is no elephant calf in this herd. Had there been any calf, the herd could have been far more possessive and aggressive.
Range officer of Kundri Umesh Dubey said the herd has destroyed paddy and maize fields falling at areas like Saalo, Purnadeeh.
There is so far no loss of house or humans. Fear of conflict between humans and elephants has not yet broken out.
Binay Pandey of the Kundri range said elephants shy from getting near to such houses where there are lit LED bulbs.
A house in the dark is an easy target for the elephants but where there is a light elephant avoids going near it.
Villagers raise loud sounds and use battery torches to shoo away the elephants.
The herd remains in no hurry. It finishes its food only then it moves on.
