Govt proposes new ring roads in five more divisions of UP

Thursday, 22 August 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

The Yogi Adityanath government is making significant strides in enhancing connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, with plans to introduce new ring roads and bypasses in five more divisions of the state.

In a recent meeting, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented a proposal to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking approval for this initiative.  Currently, construction of ring roads is underway in 12 out of the state’s 18 divisions, with the Lucknow division already seeing its completion.

The state government has now proposed similar projects for five divisions. Once approved by the Central government, the construction of new ring roads will start, enhancing connectivity across all divisions of Uttar Pradesh.

Currently, significant progress is being made in Gorakhpur and Kanpur divisions, where the work on ring roads is actively underway. In divisions such as Agra, Chitrakoot, Meerut, Prayagraj and Varanasi, certain sections of the ring roads have already been completed, with new phases of construction now in progress. The Basti division has received approval for its ring road, and the Ayodhya division’s ring road has also got the cabinet’s nod.

Meanwhile, the detailed project report (DPR) for the Bareilly division’s ring road is finalised, and work on the northern parts of ring roads in Azamgarh and Moradabad divisions is ongoing. While the construction of ring roads is advancing rapidly across 12 divisions of the state, it has already been completed in Lucknow.

The Yogi government is preparing to extend this connectivity boost to five more divisions –– Aligarh, Devipatan, Jhansi, Mirzapur, and Saharanpur. In addition to these plans, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also approached the Union minister with a request to construct new bypasses in 14 districts across Uttar Pradesh.

Currently, 53 districts in the state are already equipped with bypass facilities, with ongoing construction in eight more districts. The process of establishing bypasses has gained momentum in the remaining 14 districts, including Farrukhabad, Auraiya, Bulandshahr, Mainpuri, Bahraich, Gonda, Baghpat, Chitrakoot, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Sambhal, Kaushambi, Chandauli and Shravasti.

In 2017, the state had 48 national highways, a figure that has nearly doubled to 93 by 2024. Similarly, the length of these highways has expanded significantly, growing from approximately 8,000 kilometres in 2017 to nearly 13,000 kilometres in 2024.

The expansion of expressways has been equally impressive. From just one expressway in 2017, the state now boasts six expressways in 2024. The total length of these expressways has surged from 165 kilometres in 2017 to an impressive 1,225 kilometres by 2024. Additionally, the construction of several link expressways, including the Ganga Expressway, is progressing rapidly, further enhancing the state's infrastructure.
