Forest officials deployed along inter-State border

Friday, 31 January 2014 | PNS | Dehradun

After the tigress declared man-eater in Uttar Pradesh, reportedly killed its seventh victim in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night, the Uttarakhand Forest department officials claim to have deployed a team along the inter-State border.

The department team is monitoring the situation in case the tigress returns to Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand from where it is believed to have entered the neighbouring State.

According to Corbett deputy director Saket Badola, a department team has been deployed along the UP border and is monitoring the situation. In case the big cat enters Uttarakhand and is spotted in a situation posing danger to humans, efforts will be made to tranquilise it.

Regarding whether the tiger responsible for killing a woman in the Kalagarh dam colony in Corbett on January 14 had been tracked, Badola said that the pug marks of a male tiger had been found near the woman killed in Kalagarh so this kill is not related to the tigress declared man-eater in UP.

Meanwhile, wildlife activists state that the UP Forest department should try to tranquilise and relocate the tigress declared a man-eater instead of trying to kill it. "The department should tranquilise the tigress and relocated it to an area with abundant prey to prevent it from attacking humans. Shooting the tigress should be the last resort," said People for Animals, Uttarakhand member secretary Gauri Maulekhi.
