Demanding an impartial probe into the farmers’ suicide cases in the State, the Manav Adhikar Suraksha Manch (MASM) gave a memorandum to the Ganjam district Collector at a public hearing meeting held near the Brahmapur Sub-Collector office on Tuesday.
The rights activists complained that though Ganjam is an agro-based district, the farmers are yet to get any benefits. The State Government is neglecting the farmers, they added.
In their five-point charter of demands, they demanded compensation to the family members of the farmers, who have committed suicide due to crop loss and debt burden. They also demanded setting up of cold storages and opening of Mandis in the district.
Among others, Manch president Upendra Nath Mishra, secretary Maguni Nahak, Bansidhar Bhuyan and Dr AR Verma were present.
