Diesel generators allowed for emergency services

Saturday, 30 September 2023 | PNS | New Delhi

As a one-time exception, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)  has now permitted DG Sets for all capacity ranges, to be run only for emergency services in the National Capital Region  NCR, even under periods of restrictions under the GRAP only up to December 31.

DG sets deployed for emergency services are also required to install / adopt appropriate means for emission control in the intervening period and with effect from January 1, 2024, the Government said in a release.

Such DG sets shall be permitted to operate in the NCR, strictly subject to adherence to the stipulated schedule / measures for emission control.

The Commission, from time to time, observed and has sensitised all stakeholders that amongst other contributors, large-scale use of diesel generating sets is a major contributing factor for deterioration of air quality in the region.

To this end, the Commission, since February, 2022 and from time to time, thereafter, has issued Directions, Orders and Advisories for control of emissions from such DG sets and their regulated operations.

The decision comes as a relief for sectors dependent on uninterrupted power supply as its extends the deadline previously set for a complete ban on diesel generator sets.

The nine categories benefiting from this temporary reprieve include commercial and residential complexes employing elevators, escalators and travelators as well as medical facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes using critical medical equipment. Railway services and stations, along with metro services, airports and interstate bus terminals, have also been granted the exemption.

Sewage treatment plants, water pumping stations, projects of national significance concerning national security, and services related to telecommunications, information technology and data management can also operate diesel generator sets during this period.
