BSP to contest civic polls  with full strength

Wednesday, 31 August 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

In a bid to regain the lost ground in Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati is aiming to contest the forthcoming civic body polls in the state with full strength.

She believes that the hard-earned ‘sanjeevani’ in civic elections will be useful in the next Lok Sabha elections.

Sources said Mayawati was busy having discussions with senior party leaders, including former MPs and MLAs. “The BSP is confident that by restoring the crumbling support base in UP, the weakness caused by the lack of success in the recent elections will be overcome before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” the sources said.

In the last few elections BSP has apparently lost support amongst their core voters. It could be gauged from the fact that the party won only one seat in the assembly elections held earlier this year.

The BSP supremo has already launched a membership campaign to re-establish the party base before the announcement of civic poll dates. Sources said that the BSP was preparing to field strong candidates for mayoral polls on 17 seats. A report in this regard has also been sought from sector incharges.

BSP sources said that the candidature would be decided on the basis of this report.

The BSP got an unexpected victory in the 2017 civic elections. Furkan in Aligarh and Sunita Verma in Meerut won the mayoral elections while in Saharanpur, the BSP gave a tough fight to the BJP.  The BJP polled 1,21,179 votes while the BSP secured 1,19,193 votes.
