To save human lives from train accidents at unmanned level-crossings (UMLCs), the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has eliminated all the UMLCs from its jurisdiction before October, much before the end of year 2018.
The Ministry of Railways, which had set a target to eliminate all the UMLCs gates by 2020, then further targeted it by the 2018-end. However, the ECoR met the target before October. The ECoR eliminated as many as 117 UMLCs in 2018 only.
Altogether, 414 UMLCs have been eliminated by the ECoR since April 1, 2014. From April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2018, the ECoR had closed 297 UMLCs and provided road under-bridges (RUBs) or limited-height subways (LHSs), diversion and manned.
From August 2014 onwards, the Khurda Road Division has deployed Gate Mitras/Gate Counsellors at vulnerable/sensitive level-crossing gates to prevent accidents and alert commuters about the approaching trains.
