AIIMS basement remains flooded after Friday’s downpour

Sunday, 30 June 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The basement of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi remained flooded on Saturday following heavy rains. AIIMS Media Protocol In-Charge, Rima Dada, reported that the Operation Theatre (OT) at the AIIMS Trauma Centre has not yet resumed operations.

"Heavy rains caused severe water logging, especially in the basement of the Trauma Centre where heavy generators and equipment are located. This led to the stoppage of OTs, though four life-threatening surgeries were still performed," Dada said. The director and additional director assessed the situation and worked on clearing the water logging in the basements and lifts.

Power was cut by NDMC, causing OTs to shut down until 4 p.m. Once power was restored, surgeries continued throughout the night. The basement remains waterlogged, but steps are being taken to prevent future incidents.

The tunnel connecting AIIMS to the trauma centre has been cleared, but Basement 3 is still inundated. Pumps have been installed to remove the water. Operations will resume once electrical engineers give the go-ahead.

On June 27, 364 patients were operated on, and on June 28, 347 surgeries were conducted despite the heavy rains.

Additionally, the Neurosciences Centre’s OTs was affected due to non-functional air-conditioning and water seepage, causing neurosurgeries to be referred to other hospitals.
