U Sammilani holds poet Jayadeva birthday 

Bhubaneswar: The Utkal Sammilani and Auto-rickshaw Mahasangha, Jayadev Vihar jointly celebrated the birthday of Gita Govinda writer Mahakabi Jayadeva with members garlanding the poet’s statue at Jaydev Vihar square here on Saturday. Sammilani’s Mancheswar Industrial Estate Branch president Dillip Dashsharma, Mahasangha president Kabindra Paschimaray, working president Shreedhar Sahoo, secretary Pramod Nayak, Sammilan general secretary Adwaita Patra, branch VPs Sheetal Chandra Mohanty and Nirakar Mahalik, joint secretary Ashok Palatasingh, council member Er Shiba Prasad Mishra and Shantilata Sahoo  garlanded the statue, among others.

 Sudarsan wins gold at world sand sculptures event 

Bhubaneswar: Bringing laurels to Odisha and the nation and adding another feather to his cap, internationally-acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won the jury prize gold medal at the 10th World Sand Sculptures Championship 2017 in Moscow. He won the medal for creating a sculpture of lord Ganesh with the message “GO GREEN”. The championship with “World around us” as its theme was held between April 22 and 28 I which 25 renowned sand sculptors from various countries participated. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has congratulated Sudarsan for the achievement.

Sabita Hota gets Shreekhetra Shree Samman 

Bhubaneswar: The Shreekhetra Shree Samman was conferred on Mahapatra Sabita Hota for her significant contribution in the field of music at a programme held at Puri on Friday. Hota received the award from former Union Minister Braja Kishore Tripathy. Hota, a Sanskrit teacher at the KV-I here, is an acclaimed singer of the AIR, Sambalpur and Cuttack in Odisha and Siliguri and Kolkata in West Bengal. Her music albums have left indelible marks in the hearts of Odia people. Daughter of Harischandra and Manoroma Mahapatra, she has been trained by revered Guru Singhari Shyam Sundar.

‘Nehru Sangh deserves centre of excellence tag’

Banpur: The Nehru Seva Sangh (NSS), Banpur deserves status of a centre of excellence for activities of welfare of disabled and children. It is a premier institution of the State since 1946, said NSS president Pyaremohan Tripathi at the annual function of the Children’s Home of the NSS recently. Children of the organisation showcased their talents in typical Odia cultural programmes. Prize distributed to them by Tripathi and chief guest AVARD general secretary Surendra Kumar. BEO DK Barik, NSS VP Dhirendranath Patra, secretary Sarojini Dash and treasurer Om Prakash Agrawal and Prof RN Hota spoke at the meeting.

Man gunned by son over dispute in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: In a shocking incident, a man was reportedly shot dead by his son over a quarrel at the Kankadakhol forest under the Jamankira police limits in Sambalpur district on Friday night. According to police sources, Purnachandra Jhakar (45) and his son Jayalal (18) had gone to the forest for hunting purpose. However, a dispute ensued between the two, following which Jayalal fired at his father with a gun killing him on the spot.

GKEl provides relief to D’nal fire victims 

Bhubaneswar: The GMR Kamalanga Energy limited (GKEl) distributed sarees, dhotis, lungis and towels to 250 families of Dhenkanal district’s Dhobaninandar, whose house were gutted in a fire on April 15. GKEl COO Ramesh R Pai and staffs distributed clothes in the present of Steel, Mines and labour Minister Prafulla Mallik, Hindol MlA Simarani Nayak and other local leaders.

Adani launches healthcare van for Bhadrak people

Bhadrak: In order to provide quality healthcare to the villagers of Dhamra, Tihidi, Chandbali and Bhadrak blocks, the Adani Foundation and Helpage launched a well-equipped mobile healthcare on Saturday. District Collector Gyanaranjan Das inaugurated the van, which comprises an expert doctor, paramedic staffs and a social protection officer. Sub-Collector Narottam Behera, Dhamra Port CEO Subrat Kumar Tripathy, Corporate Affairs head Meeth Meheta and DPCl CSR head Pravat Kumar Mishra were present among others.
