‘BJD Govt has failed to protect women’

Sunday, 31 October 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The visiting BJP national Mahila Morcha fact-finding team, after probing the Mamita Meher murder case, on Saturday alleged that the Naveen Ptanaik-led BJD Government has failed to stop crimes against women. Quoting the NCRB, they said Odisah is placed second in the country in the crimes against women while conviction rate here is just 9.20 per cent.

Describing Mamita’s murder as gruesome, the BJP delegation said that all along in the case, Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra’s involvement and acquaintance with main accused Govinda Sahu comes loud and clear.

Mishra needs to step down first to pave way for an independent inquiry and the Government should order a CBI inquiry. Unless the Minister’s role is probed and Mamita’s family gets justice, the criminals would roam free and Ministers and other BJD leaders would continue protecting the perpetrators of crimes, the delegation said.

The delegation led by BJP Mahila Morcha president Vanatha Srinivasan and including MP Sunita Duggal and West Bengal MLA Srirupa Mitra Choudhury, which had visited Mamita’s family in Balangir district and the place of murder in Kalahandi on Friday, would submit its report to party national president JP Nadda.

The delegation also demanded that all the witnesses in the Mamita case need to be protected under the Witness Protection Scheme and Mamita’s family is entitled under the Victim Compensation Fund, which is yet to be provided.
